South Boston museum bringing back special exhibit just in time for Halloween

SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS 10) - The South Boston Museum of Fine Arts and History is bringing back an old exhibit just in time for Halloween.

After more than a decade of rotating through different exhibits, the museum's exhibit on local cemeteries and funeral homes is making a comeback.

It features the history of two local cemeteries, as well as actual 19th century coffins from local coffin makers, antique embalming equipment and a 19th century hearse.

Museum Director Jennifer Bryant said people started taking an interest in funeral practices of the past, compared to today, during the renovation of a historic funeral home in town earlier this year.

"We're just going through the history of the funeral homes and the history of how cemeteries have evolved over time to kind of bridge that gap," Bryant explained.

On Friday, from 6-9 p.m., the museum will hold an open house to showcase the exhibit.

Food will be served. The cost is $20 for museum members and $25 for non-members.
