Roanoke County Fire Chief looking to fill 11 positions

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Two fire trucks in Roanoke County could be put out of service if nearly a dozen positions aren't filled.

Fire Chief Steve Simon said the department has 11 openings right now and they're looking at several options to fill the gap.

One is to take the overtime budget and use that money to fill the positions, if not, the chief fears a fire truck potentially in Cave Spring and one in Hollins could sidelined because of the man-power shortage.

"If all goes well and all goes forward we'll get approved for those 11 full-time positions that will help our department and give us minimum staffing and we won't have to take out any units on a regular basis and overall I think it's best for the community," said Steve Simon, Roanoke County Fire and EMS Chief.

Simon said he has to get approval from the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors to fill the positions when the fiscal budget is submitted in the spring.
