HENRY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A Henry County deputy had to be flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Wednesday night after being hit by an SUV while responding to a crash.
Virginia State Police are investigating the crash that injured Deputy Corey Waddell.
Before that crash, state police and the sheriff's office responded to a call of a crash on Kings Mountain Road. When the trooper arrived, he found a vehicle had collided with a deer. The initial report for the crash indicated the driver was injured and rescue was dispatched to the scene. It was later determined that the driver of that vehicle was not injured in the crash.
As the trooper and two sheriff's deputies were clearing the roadway of debris from the damaged vehicle, one of the responding volunteer firefighters pulled up to the scene, driving his personal vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer.
At about 8 p.m., in the 3300 block of Kings Mountain Road, the two deputies were standing on the shoulder when state police say the Chevy pulled onto the same shoulder and struck Waddell.
He rolled up onto the hood of the SUV and was then thrown off, striking the guard rail, according to a press release from state police.
Waddell was flown to the hospital and is currently being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The second deputy at the scene was not struck or injured.
The driver of the Blazer, a 19-year-old man from Bassett, was not injured in the crash.
Charges are pending at this time as the investigation remains ongoing. The Virginia State Police Salem Division Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
