Montgomery County Schools add WiFi on buses

CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - The Montgomery County School District is the first in the Commonwealth to put WiFi on school buses.

Leaders said the goal is give students a chance to do homework online who may not have access to the internet at home.

So, far, only one bus has WiFi installed and it will be parked in the Shawsville-Elliston area of the county.

"I'm just glad Montgomery County schools is doing stuff like this, I'm sure it's going to help kids who don't have the internet or other stuff like that at home," said Lomar Lopez, a parent.

It costs about $4,000 to install WiFi on the bus, school leaders said the installation is expected to complete before the end of the school year.

"We are always trying to meet the needs of our students educationally, and this is one opportunity we can provide something at home that will help them at school," Brenda Drake, the Spokesperson for Montgomery County Public Schools said.
