Round Town: holiday cheer and turkey

(WSLS 10) - See the Capitol Christmas Tree as it makes a stop in Blacksburg. The tree will be on Main Street from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Lyric Theatre will show the movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" for free at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Head to the Salem Civic Center for the Roanoke Valley Mineral and Gem Society's annual mineral and gem show. It's Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 and is good for all three days.

Chateau Morrisette gets in the holiday spirit. There will be a performance of the Nutcracker Suite at 3:30 with a bell soloist performing starting at 4 p.m. Stick around as a chorus performs ancient Christmas carols before the lighting of its Christmas Tree at 5:45 p.m.

Visit the National Thanksgiving Turkey at Virginia Tech. President Barack Obama pardoned the bird on Wednesday. The turkey and backup, Tater and Tot, will now live at Gobbler's Rest, a newly built enclosure inside the Livestock Judging Pavilion. You can visit the turkey Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Shop local this weekend for Small Business Saturday. The day was started by American Express in 2010 as a way to boost local retailers. Many local retailers will have great deals as you look for the perfect Christmas gift.
