Melrose Branch Library could move to Goodwill Jobs Campus
ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - There are plans in the works to relocate Roanoke's Melrose Branch Library to the Goodwill Jobs Campus on Melrose Avenue.
On Tuesday, library staff hosted community meetings to update residents and stakeholders about the project.
Organizers said the plan is to turn a section of the Goodwill Jobs Campus into the library. Bruce Phipps, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys President & CEO, said the public-private partnership would help to better serve the community.
"This whole community concept is what we are really excited about," said Phipps. "Goodwill and the library co-locating, sharing resources, coming together so the community can be better served."
Sheila Umberger, Director of Roanoke Public Libraries, said the move is still in the planning phase and is expected to allow the library to expand to nearly 13,000 square feet. Umberger said the $4 million project is expected to be complete by next summer and will provide more resources to the community.
"For the first time we'll have a Teen Center which is highly needed" she said. "We'll also have services, additional computers."
A public meeting about the Melrose Library relocation is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 13 at the Goodwill Jobs Campus on Melrose Avenue.
Umberger said community input is encouraged. Additional meetings are expected to take place in the future.
