Victim in fatal I-81 Roanoke County crash identified

ROANOKE COUNT (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police say one person is dead after a crash on Interstate 81 at the 134-mile marker.

The crash occurred at 10:56 a.m.Friday when a Jeep Liberty traveling north on Interstate 81 lost control, ran off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle then crossed the median and struck a 1999 Honda Civic traveling southbound.

The Jeep was driven by Monte Maurice Zuck, 72, of Oklahoma City, Okla.  He was wearing his seatbelt and was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for injuries received in the crash.

The 1999 Honda was driven by Hannah Marie Hochstetler, 26, of Jackson, Miss. She was wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene. Caleb A. Hochstetler, a passenger in the vehicle, was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for injuries received in the crash.

Virginia Accident Reconstruction was called to assist with the investigation.

Zuck was charged with reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation.


ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - All south lanes on I-81 southbound near exit 134 are closed.

VDOT says the closure is due to an accident. All south lanes are closed.

As of about noon, traffic backups are approximately 3 miles.
