Bland County community remembers two women lost in hit-and-run crash
MECHANICSBURG (WSLS 10) - A community is mourning the loss of two women in Bland County, after a hit-and-run crash left them dead during their daily walk together.
It happened on Monday morning on Wilderness Road.
Frances Burgess, 66, and Connie DeHart, 69, were killed when they were hit by a car while out for their daily walk with a third friend.
Police say the driver, 27-year-old Alex Nunley, kept driving. He was later arrested at a home in Holly Brook.
About 70 people attended a vigil for both women Monday night at Mechanicsburg Christian Church.
The pastor there said this was not the ending anyone was planning for, but the women's impact will last forever.
"Loving your neighbor as yourself," said Pastor Tom Maurer. "The example has been set for us. Connie and Fran have both set the example."
Nunley is charged with three counts of felony hit-and-run, reckless driving and failure to report an accident.
