Pulaski County works to cover 30 percent budget increase
PULASKI (WSLS 10) - Pulaski County leaders are trying to figure out how to increase next year's budget by 30 percent.
The proposed numbers have the 2018 budget at about $12 million more than the current year. That includes an increase request from the schools of $1.4 million to cover teacher salary raises, rising health insurance costs and retirement.
"It's a huge challenge to overcome, not just for Pulaski County, but for rural Virginia and rural America," said Pulaski County administrator Jonathan Sweet. "But with the right approach, communities like Pulaski County can put themselves in the best position to play out a badly dealt hand."
The proposed budget also includes about $10 million in capital improvement projects. Those will be spread out over a five-year period.
