Martinsville YMCA in need of swimsuits for kids
MARTINSVILLE (WSLS 10) - The YMCA in Martinsville is asking for help making sure first graders are able to continue receiving free swim lessons.
Donations of swimsuits are needed.
The Y uses the swimsuits to give to the kids when they forget to bring a swimsuit with them.
Since 2013, the Y has brought first graders from Martinsville and Henry County to the Y during the school year and given them free swim lessons.
But now, the Y has run out of spare swimsuits.
"A lot of times, they'll for get their suit for the day, they'll forget a towel. They may not have a suit or a towel," said YMCA CEO Brad Kinkema. "So, we want to have those things on hand so when they come they're not sitting out watching everybody else learn water safety."
Kinkema estimates that since the program began hundreds of first graders have participated.
"The pilot program we did with one school, in one class alone, had 25 kids. 23 of them had never taken swim lessons before," Kinkema explained. "So, that tells you that there's a real need."
Swimsuits from size 4T to 12 are needed and can be dropped in the donation box at the entrance to the YMCA.
