Bystanders help capture man who escaped from custody in Danville

ANVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Danville Sheriff's Office is reviewing its policies and procedures after a man escapes custody.

Just before 8 p.m. Thursday, a man escaped while being transported from Danville Regional Medical Center to Petersburg for mental health treatment.

It happened in the 400 block of Main St.

The man was handcuffed and shackled, but managed to unbuckle himself, kick out a window in the patrol car he was being transported in, and climb out.

Bystanders caught him before he could get away.

"As soon as it happened, my mind immediately went to those types of scenarios; what could we do better next time," said Danville City Sheriff Mike Mondul.

"We did everything right we thought and then something still happened. Again, the good thing is it had a happy ending. But certainly, we're already evaluating equipment enhancements to try to prevent something like this from happening again."

After the man was caught by bystanders, the sheriff's office's special response team was called in to take him to Petersburg.
