UPDATE - 2 women killed in crash on I-81 in Wythe County

UPDATE:

WYTHE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The identities of two women killed in a car crash in Wythe County have been released. According to Virginia State Police 21-year-old Paige M. Neubauer of Virginia Beach and 21-year-old Bridgett J. Oliver of New Castle were killed in the three-vehicle crash that happened on Interstate 81 at the 83 mile marker.

Virginia State Police say a Honda Insight was traveling south on I-81 when it crossed through the median and hit head-on a Honda Civic in the northbound lanes. The impact caused the Insight to spin around in the northbound lanes and be hit by a northbound Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Neubauer, the driver of the Honda Insight was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. She died at the scene.

Jones, the driver of the Honda Civic was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The passenger of the Civic, Bridgett J. Oliver, 21, of New Castle, Va., died at the scene. Both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 46-year-old Georgia man, and his three passengers were transported to LewisGale Hospital in Pulaski County for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation at this time. The Virginia State Police Wytheville Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.

All lanes of I-81 northbound were reopened to through traffic by 1:29 a.m. Saturday (April 1).

UPDATE - Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Wythe County.

It happened at 10:04 p.m. Friday night, on I-81 at Mile Marker 83.

Police say a vehicle was heading south on I-81 when it crossed the median, striking a sedan head-on. A northbound pickup truck then struck the two sedans.

Two people were killed, one from each of the sedans.

The people in the pickup truck have been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment; their conditions are unknown.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The crash is under investigation.

The Virginia State Police Wytheville Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.

All lanes of traffic are reopened as of 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

WYTHE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - VDOT says drivers can expect major delays due to an accident.

It is on I-81 at mile maker 83 in Wythe County.

All north lanes are closed. The south left shoulder and left lane are closed.

Traffic backups are approximately 2.5 miles. Traffic is being diverted off Exit 80 onto F-004 then onto Route 619 and back onto I-81 North at exit 84.

The I-77 North Exit 32 on ramp to I-81 North is closed.
