What's News Today: May 18, 2017

Here's a look at some of the stories we'll be following today

Fallen law enforcement officers will be remembered today.  The Regional law Enforcement Memorial Service takes place today in Roanoke.  Families of fallen officers from Roanoke to Buena Vista will attend.  In Campbell County, a wreath laying ceremony takes place today.  Officers will remember Deputy Jason Saunders, who died in the line of duty in April 2007.

Franklin County Sheriff Bill Overton holds a town hall meeting today.  He will take questions after a brief presentation about what the office is involved in.  The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at The Club at Heatherwood in Boones Mill.

Firefighters will get their feet scanned today using 3D laser scanners.  Foot Levelers is partnering with Roanoke Fire-EMS, giving them the durability they while on and off the job.  They will get custom orthotics that will inspect to make sure they are holding up.

Party in Elmwood returns to Downtown Roanoke tonight.  Blackwater Rhythm and Blues Band will perform.  The beach music dance party takes place each Thursday night through mid September.  Admission is $5.

NCAA Division III baseball returns to Southside.  The South Region Tournament gets underway today at American Legion Post 325 Stadium in Danville.  The double elimination tournament runs through Sunday.

The City of Lynchburg cuts the ribbon on a new trail.  City leaders will celebrate the opening of the newest extension of the train system and renovations to the athletic area.

The Bedford Little Feet Meet kicks off this morning.  Young athletes will compete in a number of events.  During the opening ceremony, Liberty High School will receive the Unified Champions School of Excellence Award for Virginia.
