Victim identified in deadly Axton graduation party shooting

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's office says 17-year-old Tion Burton has died

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY – The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office has identified the teen who was killed at a graduation party in Axton early Sunday morning.

Police said 17-year-old Tion Kwantae Burton was shot and killed at 12:57 a.m. Sunday during a shooting at "Axton Lodge, The Pines."

Police said two other men were shot and taken to the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. One was treated and released with minor injuries. The second has been transferred to Carilion in Roanoke for surgery.

Both are expected to recover from their injuries, police said.

Investigators also found that a woman who was at the gathering was hit by a car as it was trying to leave the scene. Police said her injuries are not life-threatening.

A fourth person was also taken to the Danville Regional Medical Center and treated for cuts that came from shattered glass.

Investigators said it was a high-school graduation party that was being held for Henry County, Magna Vista and Bassett area high school seniors.

The investigation continues as police continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses and follow up on leads.
