Crews work on sidewalks in downtown Roanoke ahead of repaving

Paving Church Avenue from 2nd Street to 5th Street this summer

ROANOKE, Va. – Sidewalk construction is underway in downtown Roanoke.

Crews will be paving Church Avenue from 2nd Street to 5th Street this summer.

The first step is working on sidewalks, adding curb cut ramps at each street corner to comply with ADA requirements.

"I think the important thing is that for alternatively abled persons, they then have the ability to have better access to our sidewalks and corners and we certainly have some of those challenges within the city of Roanoke and we're doing what we can at this point to try to address those issues," said Mark Jamison, Roanoke transportation division manager.

Jamison said that traffic shouldn't be impacted too much by the sidewalk work, but people will see more impact as road repaving efforts get underway around Roanoke this summer.
