Danville Parks and Rec emphasizing safety as boathouse opens for season

Boating safety demos provided for opening weekend

DANVILLE – With the Dan River back to a safe level after recent rain, Danville's boathouse is finally open for the season.

The boathouse was supposed to open last weekend, but the parks and recreation department postponed the opening until this weekend because of the high water level in the river.

At the opening, parks and rec employees provided a free safety demonstration for kayaks, canoes and paddle boards.

Now that the boathouse is open, employees are reminding people about boating safety.

"Prepare. Plan for your trip. Check the water level. Check the weather forecast. Make sure there's no thunderstorms that day. We want to avoid lightening. Also, try to scout out the area you're going to. Know the river, know if there's any dams," said Kyle Autrey, the Danville Parks and Recreation Department's outdoor programs coordinator.

The boathouse will be open through the end of October.
