CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – A fire destroyed a home in Christiansburg and left one police officer hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

The fire happened in the 100 block of Hill Street just before 1 p.m.

The Christiansburg Police Department responded to a call about a residential fire. Police say the first officer to get there, Capt. Doug Weddle, entered the residence to check for occupants and found one man sleeping inside.

Weddle rescued the man and four dogs from the residence. After exiting, he was overcome by smoke and transported to LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
