Motorcyclist killed early Sunday morning in single-vehicle crash

Crash happened in Halifax just before 3 a.m.

HALIFAX – On Sunday a motorcyclist was killed during a single-vehicle crash in Halifax County. According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened at 2:59 a.m. on Burton Road/Route 614, less than a mile north of Route 613.

Virginia State Police said the motorcyclist, Michael B. Desmond Jr., 27, of Scottsburg, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

Desmond was driving a 2001 Honda CVR 600 F4 south on Route 614 when the motorcycle ran off the left side of the road and hit a utility trailer parked on private property. The impact of the crash caused the rider to be thrown from the motorcycle.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash.
