Lynchburg man hikes to National D-Day Memorial in Bedford to honor veterans

The 30-mile hike took eight hours

BEDFORD, Va. – People from all across the country traveled to Bedford Tuesday to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of D-Day, including one man who walked from Lynchburg.

Craig Harner says the 30-mile hike took him eight hours.

He left at 2:40 a.m. and made it to the National D-Day Memorial just in time for the ceremony at 11 a.m.

Harner and a group of friends ran the distance last year. He says this is the least he could do.

"There's men there that, people that can't do it, whether they've been disabled in combat and I can do it. So it's just a small sacrifice to show my appreciation for what they did," Harner said.

Harner plans to make a similar trek to honor veterans next year on D-Day.
