Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad helping encourage kids to read

Rescue squad members participated in annual 'Day of Reading' Friday

HENRY COUNTY – Local first responders and other public figures are helping encourage kids to read.

Friday, United Way of Henry County and Martinsville held its 10th annual "Day of Reading."

Basset Volunteer Rescue Squad members read to kids at Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Stanley Town.

Other first responders, elected officials, and community leaders read to kids at other locations.

United Way of Henry County and Martinsville Community Engagement Coordinator Julia Hollandsworth said the goal is to create a fun experience for the kids to associate reading with.

"Every volunteer that we have really tries to make it an experience that the children love and will remember and will associate with reading," Hollandsworth said.

"Research has shown that the more a child reads the better they are set up for success in school," she continued.

Through the United Way's partnership with Smart Beginnings Martinsville-Henry County, each kid at each location volunteers visited got a book to take home with them.
