Danville church reaching out to city's youth in attempt to help reduce violence

Youth Open Door Session held Friday

DANVILLE – A Danville church is giving the city's youth an opportunity to discuss issues they may be dealing with.

Union Street Missionary Baptist Church held a Youth Open Door Session Friday.

It's part of a continuing effort by organizations and individuals in the city to help reduce violent crime by preventing young people from getting involved in crime.

Kids could come and talk to the pastor about any issues they're dealing with.

Pastor Charles Hairston says even though events like this haven't gotten a whole lot of kids to show up, he feels that can change if churches and other organizations keep trying.

"This is a first step. If you do nothing, you can't expect anything. So we're going to avail ourselves, and if this doesn't work, then we've got to try something else," Hairston emphasized.

In the last month, there have been three homicides. All of the victims were under the age of 25.

A Danville teen was also shot and killed n Pittsylvania County.
