Flying ants descend on Wimbledon

Tennis stars battle bugs on the court

Flying ants swarmed Wimbledon Wednesday.

The warmest day of Wimbledon came and went Wednesday, but not before tennis stars battled hoards of flying ants on the court.

ABC News reports waves of the bugs are moving across Britain in conjunction with the perfect storm of heat, humidity and wind. American Steve Johnson said one of the insects entered his ear during a match, which he ultimately won over Moldova's Radu Albot.

"They were everywhere," said Johnson. "It was a mess out there. I've never seen that here before."

Britain's Johanna Konta worried she might swallow some during her match with Donna Vekic.

"I definitely have taken home a few," said Konta. "Both in my belly and in my bags."
