What's News Today: July 10, 2017

Here's a look at some of the stories we'll be following today


Part of Route 717 in Rockbridge County will be closed starting today for roadwork.  The closure will take place Monday through Thursday through July 21st from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Route 11 and Route 716.

Route 727 will be closed at Cedar Creek Bridge in Fairfield starting today.  Crews will replace portions of the bridge over Thorny Branch.  Work is expected to last through July 27th. 

New River Community College holds a day camp, starting today, for middle and high school girls.  The "GenCyber Ninja Day Camp" will introduce the girls to four areas of the cyber world, including safety and cyber security, 3-D printing and drones and robotics. 

Salem City Council will hold a final vote today about microbreweries.  If the vote passes, small scale breweries will be allowed to open in industrially zoned areas.  The ordinance already allows large-scale breweries with distribution to operate in light and heavy manufacturing areas.  The city planner says the change is needed for growth, after looking at craft beer trends.  One brewery is already planning to locate in one of the city's industrial zones.

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors will vote to bring bring broadband internet to the county.  The board is expected to approve awarding an infrastructure assessment contract to The Atlantic Group of Companies.  The cost of the assessment is $53,250.  The deal comes after receiving proposals and conducting interviews with qualified firms.
