Driver charged after tanker truck overturns on I-581 ramp

Cleanup is expected to affect the evening commute.

An overturned tanker truck on I-581 South is causing a traffic issue in Roanoke Wednesday afternoon.

A tanker truck carrying diesel fuel overturned while entering an on-ramp onto I-581 from Orange Ave. around 2:30 p.m. All eastbound lanes of Orange Ave., which is also known as Route 460, are closed in that area. Traffic is being detoured onto Gainsboro Road.

The driver, 38-year-old Roanoke resident Renee Williams, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She's charged for driving with defective brakes.

As for the tanker, officials tell WSLS that it was carrying 6,200 gallons of diesel. Only 30 gallons leaked out. The spill is under control, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS Capt. Mac Craft.

Cleanup is expected to take several hours and will likely affect the evening commute.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
