Nelson County man drowns at Smith Mountain Lake
Authorities say Michael Wood was not a good swimmer.
NELSON CO., Va. – A Nelson County man drowned at Smith Mountain Lake on Saturday, according to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Foul play is not suspected in the death of 58-year-old Michael Wood.
VDGIF Sgt. Karl Martin says it appears Wood, who was not a strong swimmer, fell in near a dock at the Pelican Point Yacht Club. He had been on a boat with family members who were sleeping. When they awoke, he was missing. His family notified authorities just before 10 a.m. Saturday.
Dive teams recovered Wood's body in 17-feet deep water near the boat. A medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
