A 2008 GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling on I-81 north near mile marker 102 when police say it ran off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail. The driver then over-corrected, causing the vehicle to run off the right side of the road, through a guardrail and over an embankment, police said.

The pickup truck overturned several times, striking multiple trees before coming to rest, according to police.

Dolores Richardson, 63, of Florien, Louisiana, who was riding in the front passenger seat of the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say that the driver, Dora M. Campbell, 37, of Zwolle, Louisiana, was taken to New River Valley Medical Center with serious injuries.

Three children, ages 11, 13 and 14, who were also inside the truck, were transported to New River Valley Medical Center for examination and later released.

All five occupants in the truck were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
