Police: Bedford man wanted for auto theft escapes in handcuffs


BEDFORD, Va. – Bedford police are looking for a man who they say ran off in handcuffs after stealing a vehicle. 

Kasey Wayne Johnson, 20, of Bedford, was at the Bedford Police Department on Wednesday in reference to a vehicle theft.

He was in handcuffs as officers were preparing to take him to the Magistrate's Office so they could get warrants. While officers were escorting Johnson, they stopped to allow him to smoke a cigarette and moved his handcuffs to his front. After he finished smoking, Johnson turned and fled, according to the police department. 

Officers chased Johnson but could not stop him. The Bedford Police Department is still searching for him. 

Johnson is now wanted on two counts of grand larceny, one count of petit larceny, one count of property destruction, and one count of escaping custody without force. 

Johnson is described as a 6'1" white male weighing 160 lbs.
