New metered parking spaces in downtown Roanoke going well, city officials say

ROANOKE, Va. – Thursday marks nearly a week since the launch of the new metered parking spaces in Downtown Roanoke.

Lasting a total of 90 days the pilot program of 65 new parking spaces is an effort to free up short-term parking spots on downtown streets.

This is something business owners have been looking for.

The first hour is free, the second will cost $1, and the next hour is $3.

"From what I've seen, it’s exactly what we expected. It's gotten a lot of people that generally move their cars around inch by inch trying to avoid parking tickets parking into the garage and allows for more parking for people to come down here to the Market Building for lunch," said Elliot Broiles, executive director of the City Market Building Foundation.

The pilot program will continue Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through late September.
