ROCKBRIDGE CO. – Virginia State Police need your help finding an 18-wheeler that hit and killed a man early Friday morning on Interstate 81.

State Police Sgt. Simmons says a trooper came up to the scene about 1:27 a.m. going northbound near the Rockbridge/Augusta County line at about mile marker 205.

Sgt. Simmons says a car was parked on the right shoulder when the driver got out and was hit by a "commercial motor vehicle, most likely a freight liner truck according to evidence at the scene". Police say the driver was instantly killed at the scene. Right now, they are not sure why the driver was out of the car.

The plastic skirt or bumper would be missing from the 18-wheeler, along with possible damage to the passenger side headlight.

Police would like to talk with anyone that was on Interstate 81 northbound around the scene at about 1 a.m.

There was a passenger in the car, but that person was not able to tell police anything. Police are not releasing the name of the man killed until next of kin is notified.
