Roanoke-area high schools help kick off 'Load the Bus for Kids' drive at Walmart

The kickoff ceremony featured a drumline battle by local high school bands.

ROANOKE, Va. – While you're shopping for your family, pick up some extra supplies for students in need for the annual "Load the Bus for Kids" school supply drive.

Roanoke city and Roanoke County schools, along with the Clearbrook Walmart kicked off the event Friday. Drum lines from Patrick Henry High School and Hidden Valley High School performed and cheerleaders helped load the bus.

Throughout this weekend, Walmart stores in the area will collect school supplies for Roanoke city and county students.

"We want to give to all the kids. We don't want one child to go without supplies when school starts, no matter what. So we want to make sure we push as hard as we can from this level," said Mike Wray, of the Roanoke County school board.

The Bonsack, Clearbrook, Salem, and Valley View Walmart stores will be collecting school supplies
