Roanoke hires Texan as new city manager

Cowell has served as Amarillo's deputy city manager since December 2015

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke City Council announced who will be the city's new city manager on Tuesday afternoon.

Bob Cowell, who is currently serving as the deputy city manager in Amarillo, Texas, will take the position left vacant by Chris Morrill.

Cowell has served as Amarillo's deputy city manager since December 2015.

The city of Amarillo's population is 190,695, according to 2010 U.S. Census data. In comparison, that same data shows the city of Roanoke's population as 97,032.

Morrill left his role in April after serving as Roanoke's city manager since March 2010.

Cowell will start his new role in early September.
