Danville mayor, council members help kids start school year on positive note

Mayor, council members greeted students Wednesday morning

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville mayor John Gilstrap and vice mayor Alonzo Jones are making sure students have a good start to the school year.

Wednesday morning, Gilstrap and Jones greeted kids at Woodberry Hills Elementary School as they arrived for the first day of class.

Members of the Danville Ministerial Alliance were also there.

Gilstrap and Jones also greeted kids at GLH Johnson Elementary School.

Gilstrap says having positive interactions with the kids is important, especially given the city's focus on reaching out to young people in an effort to reduce crime in the city.

"It's very important that a child feels good about himself or herself, and we as adults need to communicate that we're proud of them and that we love them," Gilstrap said.

Other city council members greeted students at other schools Wednesday morning as well.
