Vinton police: Man leads police on chase with baby, 12-year-old child in car
VINTON, Va. – Vinton police say a driver with two children in his car led police on a chase Tuesday night.
A Vinton police officer pulled over a Chevrolet Tahoe on Tinker Ave. at 8th St.around 10 p.m. in a traffic stop. The driver initially got out of the SUV, then returned to his vehicle and drove off, according to police.
The officer pursued the SUV north on 9th St. into Roanoke onto Bibb St. SE. The driver headed west on Carvin St. SE before losing control and crashing into a tree. The driver then fled on foot.
An officer discovered two children in the vehicle and an adult male passenger. The children's approximate ages are 16 months and twelve years old. The twelve-year-old has minor injuries that were treated at the scene by Roanoke Fire and EMS.
No one was taken to the hospital.
Child Protective Services responded to the scene and located guardians.
Arrest warrants have been obtained for Ricky Allan Akers, 28, of Roanoke. He is wanted for eluding police, two counts of child endangerment, possession of marijuana as well as traffic charges.
