Sheriff's Office warns of gift card bail scam in Campbell County

Campbell County Sheriff's Office says it does not have a Sgt. Davis.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – The Campbell County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a new scam.

The Sheriff's Office says an elderly woman in Appomattox County fell victim to it.

Here how it worked, according to the sheriff's office:

  • She received a call that her grandson was under arrest
  • The caller told her she needed to buy gift cards and give the card numbers to the caller
  • Then she was to call Sgt. Davis with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office
  • The caller gave her the proper number for the Sheriff's Office

The Sheriff's Office says it does not have a Sgt. Davis.

Furthermore, it elaborated that it does not accept money for someone under arrest and does not accept gift cards for someone under arrest.

The Sheriff's Office wants to make sure others know about this scam so no one else falls victim.
