Farmers at Ikenberry Orchards say apples bloomed two weeks early due to warmer weather

Local farmers surprised by early apple season

DALEVILLE, Va. – Due to the warmer weather this year apple season came much earlier than usual.

Farmers at Ikenberry Orchards in Daleville say this is a big surprise after going through some cold freezes in previous years.

They say their apple crops are not only blooming early, they came in with a much larger crop than last year.

“Some of them are going to be as much as 50 percent more. It has been a great year, hot and dry, the fruit really like that, so they're going to be sweet and juicy,” said owner Gwen Ikenberry of Ikenberry Orchards.

Ikenberry says some of the apple varieties bloomed as much as two to three weeks early.
