Averett, Danville Fire Department team up for fire extinguisher training

Training held Monday for Averett nursing students

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University and the Danville Fire Department are teaming up to help keep students safe.

On Monday, the fire department held a fire extinguisher training class for nursing students.

Nursing program staff asked for the class to be held to make sure students are able to carry out the emergency plan for the building where the program's classes are held.

"I've never actually done it hands on. I've never actually used a fire extinguisher, so that was very interesting. Makes me feel more confident for the next time," said nursing student Chyanne Prevette.

"I encourage them to stop at fire extinguishers and read the little label on it, because if they forget what we teach today, they can always refresh themselves by just reading it," said Danville Fire Marshal Shelby Irving.

The students also participated in a fire evacuation drill.
