VIRGINIA – The Virginia region of the Red Cross has 53 responders who are in Texas or on the way. Almost a thousand Red Cross volunteers from all over the country are on the ground along the Gulf Coast.
Volunteers are working in shelters, warehouses and are also out in areas where recovery missions are still happening. WSLS 10 spoke with a Red Cross volunteer from the Roanoke area. She was deployed Friday to a warehouse right outside of Houston. She says the demand is unbelievable, and because of the massive amount of rainfall, getting supplies in and out has been difficult.
"It's been hard to get anything to us and it's really been hard to get things out. We've had the Coast Guard, the Army, the National Guard has flown helicopters in here to take supplies out and have taken people out to get them to the shelters," said Mary Fochtman.
She says the main supplies they are working with right now are cots, blankets, ready-to-eat meals and drinking water.
