Danville ministers, SCLC members continue call for Stonewall Rec Center name change

Group gathered for prayer outside rec center Monday

DANVILLE, Va. – A group of ministers and Southern Christian Leadership Council members in Danville is continuing to try to get a building renamed.

On Monday, the group gathered for a prayer outside the Stonewall Recreation Center, which they want renamed because of its reference to Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

The group prayed for the victims of the violence in Charlottesville in August.

The violence has sparked a national debate about whether it's appropriate to have public tributes to the Confederacy.

"All over the country, (people) are removing the names off of these statues and buildings, so we chose this spot to have the prayer and reflect on what happened in Charlottesville," said the Rev. Avon Keen, Virginia SCLC President.

The group has not reached out to city council directly, which has the authority to change building names, but said the idea of going before city council at an upcoming meeting is being considered.
