Red Cross prepares for Hurricane Irma amidst Harvey relief efforts

Deploying volunteers from Virginia to states threatened

ROANOKE, Va. – After pouring a significant amount of resources into Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, the American Red Cross is now working to develop a new strategy to deal with Hurricane Irma.

With the powerful storm threatening Florida and other parts of the U.S., the Red Cross is mobilizing volunteers from Virginia.

They'll deploy them to the mid-Atlantic to help support Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

"They’re very worried. This could be very catastrophic for the peninsula of Florida and so we are mobilizing. We also are supporting Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Those are definitely a part of the Red Cross as well so we're there now with volunteers supporting those areas," American Red Cross Virginia Region Executive Director Jackie Grant said.

The Red Cross already has 2,300 volunteers in Texas, but won't be sending any more because of Irma.
