WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – Investigators found human remains inside a Wythe County home that caught fire Saturday morning.

The fire started at a home in the 5300 block of Peppers Ferry Road in Max Meadows. A man was able to escape the burning house without injury.

Firefighters had been searching for a woman who was inside when the fire started. Late Monday afternoon, Virginia State Police fire investigators recovered human remains from inside the home. A medical examiner in Roanoke will perform an autopsy and identify the remains.

Although officials have not yet determined what caused the fire, state police say that there is no evidence at this time that the fire was intentionally set.
