New historical marker in Danville commemorates Averett University

Marker unveiled outside university's Main Hall Monday

DANVILLE, Va. – There is a new historical marker in Danville honoring Averett University.

The marker was unveiled Monday morning outside the university's administrative building.

It details the history of the university from its founding as Union Female College in 1859 to the present-day university.

Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks and Danville Mayor John Gilstrap both said this is a great moment for the city.

"We honor our legacy by unveiling our new historical marker for this beautiful, stately icon, Main Hall," Franks said.

"This is yet another occasion in which we can share together in commemorating and celebrating a special connection to the past," Gilstrap said.

This is Danville's 21st historical marker.
