The vote was 7-5 among members of the church's vestry.

The church was named after one of its devout members, Robert E. Lee, in 1903. It was originally established as Grace Church in the mid-nineteenth century, according to the church's website.

Back in 2015, the church voted about a name change in light of the deadly shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church.
