Lexington church named after R.E. Lee to change its name

LEXINGTON, Va. – A Lexington church named after Confederate Gen. R.E. Lee will change its name.

After a vote Monday night by the vestry, the R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church will now be named Grace Episcopal Church.

The vote was 7-5 among members of the church's vestry.

The church was named after one of its devout members, Robert E. Lee, in 1903. It was originally established as Grace Church in the mid-nineteenth century, according to the church's website.

Back in 2015, the church voted about a name change in light of the deadly shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church.
