Martinsville elementary using hats to help raise money for hurricane victims in Texas

Money will go to an elementary school destroyed by hurricane

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – A Martinsville elementary school is using hats to help raise money for an elementary school in Texas destroyed by Hurricane Harvey.

Friday was "Hats for Houston" day at Albert Harris Elementary School.

For $1, students and staff could wear whatever hat they wanted for the day.

The event began earlier this month when Hurricane Harvey caused deadly flooding in the Houston area.

Albert Harris Principal Renee Brown came up with the idea after talking to the school's STEM teacher.

"We came up with a school that looks just like us that had lost everything. Mitchell Elementary School was devastated by the storm. They do not have a school anymore," Brown said.

As of Friday, the school had raised $500.

Brown said she plans to hold more "Hats for Houston" days throughout the semester to raise more money.
