Baby boy found in car seat with thousands in cash on highway
Police are holding child in state custody
Police say a baby was found in a car seat stuffed with $5,500, a birth certificate and a social security card on the side of the highway in Oklahoma Monday.
The New York Times reports a church group that was leaving an amusement park found the boy who was estimated to have been left in the 91-degree heat for about a half an hour.
Oklahoma City police said they have located the mother and she is in the hospital for evaluation.
"We don't know why she did what she did...but people do the strangest things sometimes," Sgt. Gary Knight said. "I don't recall seeing a case like this where a baby was just left on the shoulder of a highway. This could have had a very tragic ending."
The boy is being held in state custody while police investigate.
