MARTINSVILLE, Va. – We want to clarify a story we aired on Monday regarding Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell's reaction to some NASCAR team owners' comments about national anthem protests.
In the story, we said Campbell agreed with the comments, but that was wrong.
That was a misinterpretation, it was not intentional, and we apologize.
On Tuesday, Campbell responded with the following statement:
"The First Amendment is a pillar of our nation. I respect the opinion of both Richard Childress and Richard Petty, I also respect people's right to protest and the freedom we enjoy because of the flag. That said, when we have an event at Martinsville, the National Anthem is the most important part of our prerace ceremonies and I feel as though fans are respectful and reverent when it plays."
