Nationally-recognized meditation teacher speaks in Roanoke

George Mumford has worked with NBA teams on 'mindfulness'

ROANOKE, Va. – A nationally recognized meditation teacher is in Roanoke this week for a conference.

George Mumford spoke to students at Patrick Henry High School Tuesday morning. He’ll be the main speaker a Mindfulness Conference tomorrow at Roanoke’s Mill Mountain Theater.

He’s talking about people being aware of the present moment and finding happiness through meditation. He has taught these practices to NBA players like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and has written a book, "The Mindful Athlete: Secrets to Pure Performance."

He spoke with WSLS 10 about what he wants people to take away from his talk.

"To really be present because the only time you live is now, so if you can live now and be who you are, be yourself, be authentic, be real and be joyful, that's what I want them to take," he said.

He says there are benefits to more people understanding mindfulness.

"It's a game-changer because when you're mindful you're more fully alive, so everything you do is going to be more enriched," he said.

Organizers expect around 350 people to go to tomorrow’s conference, which is the fourth annual event.
