Leland Melvin speaks to STEM educators at VMI

Melvin is a STEM advocate and former astronaut

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Virginia Military Institute got a visit from a Lynchburg native with quite the resume Tuesday morning.

Former astronaut Leland Melvin signed copies of his book, Chasing Space, during the sixth annual "STEM conference for Educators" from across state.
Melvin says he hopes to get people inspired and motivated to be the next generation of explorers. Cadets from the National Association of Black Engineers say they looking forward to continuing the legacy of Melvin.

"We're from the same high school in Lynchburg, Virginia, Heritage High School. And just meeting him and talking to him about what it takes to be an astronaut was amazing" said Miyah Boyd, cadet.

"I got to do my part to inspire the next generation to carry on that legacy. Maybe tomorrow's and maybe back to the moon but moving forward in a positive way," Melvin said.

There were more than 300 educators from across the state at VMI.
