SALEM, Va. – The discount grocery store Lidl is coming to Salem.
City leaders say the German-based grocery chain purchased vacant property near Lowe's, behind West Main Street.
The company plans to break ground in the spring.
Lidl is planning on opening 100 new stores on the East Coast by mid-2018. The first 20 will be in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Salem's Lidl will be one of three announced so far in the Roanoke and New River valleys.
The other stores are in Roanoke County near Vinton at Valley Gateway Boulevard and Challenger Avenue and in Christiansburg.
