Roanoke City Sheriff's Office holding one-day recruitment fair

Hiring 10 deputy sheriff's

ROANOKE, Va.- – For the first time, the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office is holding a one day recruitment event.

The office has 10 vacancies they want to fill. The one-day expedited deputy sheriff recruitment event is Saturday Oct. 21 at the Roanoke Police Academy at three different times during the day.

The starting pay for a deputy rose from $35,000 to $36,500.

"It's expedited because they'll be doing the written test, the physical agility test, the fingerprinting and all of the things they need to start the hiring process. If they pass all their testing, then they'll be given the initial interview the same day," said Teresa Benson, recruitment specialist.

"We opened the jail annex in 1996. So the 70-something individuals that were hired to staff the jail annex are of retirement age. So we see an influx of people taking their retirement," said Chief Deputy David Bell.

Space is limited. And they're encouraging people to sign-up for a spot before Oct.16 on the city of Roanoke website. Also check for updates on the Facebook page.

Their will be a chance for people to sign up during a career fair at William Fleming High School Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon in the cafeteria.
