Danville city leaders take steps to promote importance of public park access

Mayor shows support for national campaign

DANVILLE, Va. – City leaders across the country are stepping up their efforts to promote increased access to parks and green spaces.

Thursday afternoon, Danville's mayor, Danville city council members and others took a 10-minute walk on the city's Riverwalk Trail.

Earlier this month, an organization called The Trust for Public Land started a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of having access to public parks and green spaces.

The campaign challenges mayors to go for a 10-minute walk to promote the idea that parks and green spaces should be set up in a way that allows all residents to walk from where they live to a park or green space within 10 minutes.

"It's important for Danville and our residents to not only live within a 10-minute walk of a park or open space, but to enjoy it," said Danville Mayor John Gilstrap.

As of Thursday, more than 130 mayors supported the campaign.
